  • Game center not being updated
  •

My iPad updates the Game Center stats, but my iPhone never does. Is this a known issue? Other games do on my iPhone, so it isn't something odd in general with it. This is sort of inconvenient as I don't always have my iPad with me and I like to kill time at places like the mall and have it count :).

I have the same but the other way round. The iPhone us fine, but the iPad doesn't update. It shows the scores correctly and says it welcomes me back, but doesn't post my scores. I tried deleting the app from the iPad and reinstalling it but this didn't solve the problem. Would like to see this fixed.

Interesting.. So you have the same game center user logged in to two different devices? That's not something that we considered. I'll have to give that some thought and think of a way to handle that.

Right now what I expect it will do is only report the higher of the two scores. So if you mostly play on one device and occasionally play on the other, the device that gets the least play will always have lower accumulated scores. All it's doing is reporting the total of all scores on that device to your user name in game center. So if it's less than the total score previously reported by other device it will never LOWER your game center score. Only the device you use the most will show it's score in game center.

We could pull the current scores down from game center before each game and then just increment the gc score by the amount of the completed game... but that poses a problem if you don't have a network connection when you start the game.

Thanks for the heads up on that bug! We'll figure a work around.

I have the same issue: my iPad doesn't update GC, only my iPhone does. But in the last couple of days, I've played a few games in my iPhone, which used to update GC, and it hasn't. I'm stuck with the same total score, and it just won't update.

    Any clue?

    Thanks!

It's a complicated problem. Each device is storing it's own high scores locally. But yet you're reporting those scores to the same game center profile. Game Center only keeps track of HIGH scores. So it ignores any score you report that is lower that any previous score that you have reported. It doesn't matter which device you used to play that game. At the end of the game it reports the accumulative scores that you've earned on that version of the game.

If on your iPad you've played 20 games at 3000 points each, that's 60,000 points and that's what your game center score will be.

If then on your iPhone you play 10 more games at 3000 points each, that's only a total of 30,000 points. When your iPhone reports that score Game Center sees it as lower and ignores it.

For now that's how it's working. It's basically a limitation of Game Center. I know that ideally it would show both scores added together but that poses other problems. For example, two players could log in under the same profile name on two different devices and 'cheat' by having both of their scores add up to the same GC score. Then they'd be able to rise up the ranks twice as fast. Actually they could do this on an even bigger level with multiple people.

One idea was in each session to first READ the current Game Center score, then add the completed game's score to it and report that back. This would solve the problem of having two devices each keeping their own score. The problem with this idea is that if the device isn't connected to the internet or can't connect to Game Center for several games those game score wouldn't be added to the mix. There might be work arounds for that, like keeping track of all games between Game Center connections, but it gets very complicated. When things get complicated and have too many variables it's easier for things to get REALLY messed up.

Unfortunately at this time I think it's better for the Game Center rules to be 'total accumulated score on one device.' Maybe later in the year when we release the next version of GC we'll have something better figured out.

We're open to suggestions. Please email them to me. Thanks!

Game center is not updating for me either on my iPhone...I do not log into game center on any other device. I have deleted the app and reinstalled several times and turned off and on the phone. Any ideas? My boyfriend is kicking my a$$ and rubbing it in daily!

Many times the problem with Game Center is that you're not really logged in. If you don't see "welcome back <yourname>" when you launch the app, you're not logged in.

Apple did something that made it impossible for use to force a login. They created a 3-strikes rule where after the 3rd time you hit "cancel" it will stop asking you to sign in. After this happens it's impossible for any game to request a log in on it's own.

The way to solve it is to use the Game Center app and log in there. Go to the Game Center app, log out and then log back in. Then launch Big Bad Sudoku Book. You can test whether or not you're logged in by tapping one of the game center icons inside the game. One looks like a trophy (achievements) and the other looks like a list of 3 high scores (leader boards). Tap one of these and if you're logged it it will take you to the Game Center screen inside the app.

Please let me know if this works.
